Indiana Department of Health

The Indiana Department of Health strives to promote, protect, and improve the health and safety of all Hoosiers. Their vision is that every Hoosier reaches optimal health regardless of where they live, learn, work, or play.

BACKGROUND

On January 1, 2023, House Enrolled Act 1313, which requires all Indiana healthcare providers serving children to offer lead testing to their patients at their one- and two- year checkups, was signed into law. To increase awareness around the new law – and encourage parents of children under age 6 without record of a prior blood test to get tested – the Indiana Department of Health partnered with Asher Agency to launch a public education campaign, IndianaLeadFree.

Asher Agency requested that Bohlsen Group be their strategic communications partner on their IndianaLeadFree partnership with the Indiana Department of Health.

OVERVIEW

As part of the partnership, Bohlsen Group produced two customized tool kits that were delivered to county health departments across Indiana for them to distribute to child-serving organizations such as pediatric offices, health clinics and childcare facilities in their county. These kits included: a letter explaining the campaign, FAQ, postcards and posters, social media graphics and a pre-developed press release template with spots to insert personalized information pertinent to their county lead poisoning/testing data and community events.

These kits were mailed to each county health department as well as housed on the IndianaLeadFree landing page for easy and continued access. A variety of county-specific social media graphics were also distributed via email to each county health department.

To kick off the entire campaign, Bohlsen Group distributed a statewide press release (English and Spanish version), and created a series of angles that were pitched to print and broadcast media in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Health’s internal communications team.

Results

Through these efforts, Bohlsen Group has been able to garner 43 media placements with an estimated 8.2 million impressions to-date.
