Top 4 Things We’ve Learned from Working at an Agency

By: Erin McCreadie (Marketing & Communications Intern) & Haley Reed (Design Intern)

As a change of pace, we wanted to ask our interns to give insight into their experience at an agency.

Feedback is better than perfect and allows room for growth. [Haley]

Before my internship I was focused on making my work perfect before it was shown to anyone, but since my internship started I’ve become much more comfortable with putting perfectionism aside and asking for feedback. Designing from a marketing perspective was totally new to me and I’ve learned that better work for both clients and Bohlsen Group content comes from the feedback I get. It’s humbling in the best way and has allowed me to learn so many new skills.

Creativity needs a breather sometimes. [Haley]

Every once in a while after looking at a screen for hours, the creativity simply doesn’t flow. Through my internship with an agency like Bohlsen, I’ve been able to challenge myself with new graphics or animations each day, which is AWESOME, but sometimes it’s necessary to get off my screen and take a breather. I’ve learned that despite my urge to push through creative funks, there’s a huge benefit to getting outside for a second, calling a friend, or just closing my laptop and therapeutically staring at the ceiling. By the time I get back with a fresh set of eyes, it’s like I’m creating a completely new design.

Collaboration and teamwork are crucial to creating effective and timely projects. [Erin]

Since Bohlsen Group is a smaller agency, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with every single member of the team, and it’s been a lovely experience! I’ve noticed how closely everyone works to bring a project or campaign together.

Building real relationships with clients leads to more authentic and meaningful campaigns. [Erin]

As a communications professional - more specifically, public relations - we’re taught that our field is all about building relationships. From the short time I’ve been with Bohlsen Group, I’ve gotten to see firsthand how fostering open dialogue and frequent communication with clients can lead to lasting relationships both inside and outside of the office.
