Client: Labeled ‘today’s epidemic plaguing our youth,’ bullying has moved from the shadows of the schoolyard to prime-time television. Enter Mr. Mojo (Travis Brown), America’s Anti-Bullying Coach. Mr. Mojo spoke in more than 200 schools in 2011, showing students how they can “mojo up” to take a stand against bullying. With his sights on taking his message global, Travis Brown clearly doesn’t lack ambition.
Challenge: Mr. Mojo was getting media attention within Indiana and regionally. With the spotlight on the nationwide bullying issue, he wanted to grow his brand beyond the borders of the Midwest. Bohlsen Group was tasked with securing media coverage for Mr. Mojo in all mediums along with furthering his brand as “America’s Anti-Bullying Coach.”
Solution: Bohlsen Group developed a plan for regional and national outreach. We developed regional lists for strategic pitching to media outlets surrounding Mr. Mojo’s speaking engagements. In addition, we researched current events in all of Mr. Mojo’s tour markets to identify any bullying or related teen stories for targeted press releases and pitching.
We created national media lists to target relevant outlets with press releases tied to national events.
We also connected press with Mr. Mojo and ensured interviews were conducted at times that did not conflict with speaking engagements and travel.
Results: Mr. Mojo’s national presence has grown largely due to the media secured surrounding his speaking dates. Branded as a bullying prevention expert, Mr. Mojo has been asked to speak by several media outlets such as WISH-TV, WTHR-TV, FOX, KNBC (Los Angeles) and CNN American Morning. He has also been covered by various radio, print and web outlets including The Daily Kos, Federal News Radio (Los Angeles), Associated Press, CBS Philadelphia (online), CBS Los Angeles (online), MSNBC (online), Today Show (online), Radio Korea (Los Angeles), Minnesota News Network (radio), KOMO-AM (Seattle), Education Today (Los Angeles radio program), Washington DC Examiner, KROC-AM (Minnesota) and South Bend Tribune (Indiana).
