Client: Kristyn Decker, a first-time self-published author, wrote a memoir about growing up in a polygamist community. In Fifty Years in Polygamy: Big Secrets and Little White Lies, she gives an unprecedented and honest look of what really went on in her polygamist community and how she found the strength to leave.
Challenge: Because of shows like Big Love and Sister Wives, many people seem to think that polygamy is simply another kind of alternative lifestyle. Decker’s book shows a much different side and could generate controversy and attacks from certain communities.
Solution: We offered Decker as a counterpoint voice to the contented women featured on Sister Wives. As news broke nationally that Kody Brown was cleared of bigamy charges, we offered Decker as an expert source for comment on her experiences and the side of polygamist communities that often goes unseen.
Results: Bohlsen Group received book requests from many outlets, including The 700 Club and ABC News. The book was featured in the June/July 2012 issue of Focus on Women and will be featured in the October/November 2012 issue of BUST Magazine. We also scheduled interviews with KPCW-AM Park City, KSL-TV Salt Lake, WCCO-AM Minneapolis, The Faune Riggin Show, CNN and the Today Show.
