Client: Author Solutions Inc. (ASI), based in Bloomington, Ind., gives authors the tools to self-publish their books. Not content to stop there, ASI wanted to help authors gain exposure for their books, too, and sought a long-term partner that could create opportunities for authors who wanted to pursue publicity.
As the leader in the self-publishing industry, ASI has worked with more than 85,000 authors from around the world to publicize more than 120,000 titles. Publicity services would be offered as additional 6- to 12-week packages.
Challenge: While self-publishing is an exploding industry, many journalists are hesitant to
review and cover books authors pay to get published. And, because book genres run the gamut – religion to politics, poetry to memoirs, children’s books to self-help manuals, and more – a publicist must be able to be flexible, think on her feet and maintain a large network of media contacts.
Solution: At Bohlsen Group, we pride ourselves on creativity and efficiency, both of which have helped us achieve success for Author Solutions and the authors who publish through the company. Using our extensive relationships with the media and our expertise with leading industry software – an international database of media contacts and outlets – as well as our ability to identify and create opportunities, we carefully craft precise media lists designed specifically for each new book. When we receive a new book campaign, we take the time to identify pitch angles, story opportunities and creative ways to frame the book and the author’s personal story. We realize that cookie-cutter solutions, while perhaps faster than an individualized approach, cannot achieve the kind of results that tailoring the campaigns can.
Results: Bohlsen Group now handles various services for 80 to 120 ASI authors at a time. Bohlsen Group has secured impressive placements for the hundreds of authors we’ve handled, including CNN, NY Nightly News, FOX News (national), WHERE Boston, Essence, AOL News, The Baltimore Business Journal, Forbes.com, Media Industry Today and numerous local newspapers and broadcast news stations in cities across the country, including Memphis, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
